Only two novels that I read in 2018 rated five stars. One was a return outing by a well-loved cast of characters that answered some lingering questions and raised a few more about one of the stellar creations of 20th century literature: A Legacy of Spies by John le Carre´. The other was a guilt read following the death of another 20th century literary titan whose work I’d never opened: American Pastoral by Philip Roth.
